The Perfect Spring Mani- A DIY Photo Tutorial

Combining two of my favorite spring trends, nudes and bright pastels, this Perfect Spring Manicure tutorial was created by guest writer, Joyette S. Hughes. Joyette is a twenty-something newlywed in love, who flirts with fashion in all forms; who has an affinity towards vintage boutiques (thrift stores), deconstructed/reclaimed/re-purposed stuffs, hole in the wall restaurants and goodwill; who boasts a favorite blazer from Walmart; and whose day is made when wearing a $4 dress find from goodwill or a $6 target design, and after pairing it with a few already-owned accessories, gets stopped in Nordstrom by a personal shopper asking, "who are you wearing?" True story. Fashion happens on all budgets and in all places. Don't discriminate, find fashion wherever it is; it lives where most won't go to find it.

Benefit Hello Flawless! Liquid Foundation Review

Benefit Cosmetic's Hello Flawless! Oxygen Wow liquid foundation in 'Petal' ended up being the proper match for my skin. The coverage is buildable, meaning if you feel one layer is not quite enough coverage for your skin, feel free to throw some more on! What I love about Hello Flawless foundation is that it feels very lightweight but provides more coverage than I had initially anticipated.

I only used Benefit Cosmetics makeup for the Benefit House Party Event: Hello Flawless! foundation, Benetint on lips, Hervana blush, Big Beautiful eyes contour kit, They're Real mascara

I tend to prefer a tinted moisturizer, but found that Benefit's newest liquid foundation provided just the right amount of coverage without making me feel overdone. The super moisturizing formula not only left my normal to dry skin feeling soft, but with SPF 25 this foundation is a perfect product to take into the warmer months we are all so patiently awaiting.

Benefit Cosmetics Laughter is the Best Cosmetic House Party

What could be better than a night with your closest friends, laughing over food, drinks and... loads of free makeup? Not much if you're asking my opinion. House Party and Benefit Cosmetics provided such an opportunity for selected party hosts across the country this past weekend to introduce their Hello Flawless! Oxygen Wow Liquid Foundation.

The Benefit Laughter is the Best Cosmetic kit included all nine shades of the Hello Flawless! foundation, deluxe samples of  Porefessional pore minimizer, and Bad Gal Lash mascara for all attendees.

Also featured in the kit were full sized Benefit Cosmetic products including the luminizing Hervana blush, cult classic Benetint for lips and cheeks, neutral brow tint gel, and the Big Beautiful Eyes eye contour kit which actually did compliment all eye color and skin tones of my guests as advertised.

POREfessional Lemon Test- shrinks the pores even on a lemon's skin!

I saved the best news for last. If you're not familiar with House Party, anyone can sign up at to host future parties. The parties feature products ranging from cosmetics to food, movies, books, and more. A big thank you to House Party, Benefit Cosmetics and all who attended the party- enjoy your flawless skin!

Teen Vogue Birchbox

When we fall in love, scientists have found that our brains are literally altered for around 18 months due to the endorphins firing in our brain, causing a natural high. And when you're high, you sometimes lose a grip on reality and focus on sparkly little details. The sparkly little detail my brain is fixated on this month comes in the form of an Essie Luxe Effects nail polish bottle, one of five products featured in the Teen Vogue Birchbox this month.

Not only is this Birchbox special because one of my favorite beauty editors, Teen Vogue's Eva Chen, hand-selected the items in the box, but it is also my 18th month of being a Birchbox subscriber. If science proves right, I'm past the stage of mind altered love and seem to really have made a solid commitment to Birchbox at this point. Unlike the ratio of desirable single men to desiring single women in New York City, there are now so many available beauty subscription services yet I've remained unwavering and faithful to my Birchbox subscription.

The Teen Vogue Birchbox has moved up on the list of my personal favorite boxes due to the variety, quality, and usefulness of products included. Birchbox gave their subscribers the choice to opt out of the Teen Vogue box and truth be told I contemplated that option for a bit. I haven't been invited to a prom in ten years, and frankly most items targeted at prom attendees can border on the cheesy side. Maybe my definition of 'too cutesy' has changed in a society where wearing glitter on our nails  is not only accepted but increasingly part of the mainstream.

In this brave, new, glittery nailed world (Essie Luxe Effects), Teen Vogue Birchbox equips you with the products you need to be 'the definition of understated chic' (Annick Goutal Petite Cherie), plump up your lip's moisture (Tarte Lipsurgence lip tint), makeover your ponytail (Twistband), and remain shine free (Shiseido oil-control blotting papers) while doing so.

The icing on the cake: a discount on Teen Vogue subscription and $10 off items from

International Women's Day 2012 - Beauty companies that empower women

Did you know?
  • It is estimated that women perform two-thirds of the world’s work, yet they only earn one-tenth of the income, and own less than one percent of the world’s property.
  • More than 80% of the world’s 35 million refugees and displaced people are women and children.
  • Only 17% of the world’s elected government leaders are women.
  • More than 110 million of the world’s children, two-thirds of them girls, are not in school.
Pretty overwhelming, huh? With figures like these, it makes me even more appreciative of the efforts made by beauty companies, particularly companies owned by women, who have established sustainable ways of giving back and empowering women.

One such company is Kahina Giving Beauty, a skincare line that not only supports women of the Berber tribe through the purchase of their harvested argan oil but also donates 25% of all profits back into the women's cooperatives to improve living conditions, increase education, and advocate for women's rights. Back in December, I interviewed founder Katharine L'Heureux who shared with me that "this is a powerful time for women, especially if we work together in support of one another".

Kahina also uses specially crafted violet glass bottles which help protect from UV rays which can compromise argan oil and outer packaging made from 100% post-consumer waste. It is safe to say that Kahina Giving Beauty is truly a leader in the beauty industry for its socially conscious, eco-friendly, and high quality products.
