February My Glam Bag

Good news for anyone on the waitlist for a My Glam bag - a spot will be opening soon cause this beauty in a box (bag) lover is canceling her subscription. After a promising start with the debut bag full of cosmetics from quality brands like Urban Decay and luxury for less makeup favorite NYX Cosmetics, the January bag left me less than satisfied. I stuck it out for another month to give them a chance to redeem themselves, but instead they sent me... another Freeman facial mask! That sealed the deal for my decision to cancel my membership and confirmed my suspicion that perhaps I am not the target demographic for the My Glam bag.

Here's a peek inside my final My Glam Bag:

1. X Out Shine Control: moisturizer and mattifying complex
2. NYX Roll on Shimmer in Platinum: eye, face, and body powder
3. Premier Dead Sea Cinderella Mask and eye cream
4. Freeman Facial Masks Sachets in Goji Berry
5. NuMe styling tools and hair extensions $100 gift certificate
6. Two Ghiradelli chocolate squares (not pictured because I had a chocolate craving-sorry!)

I'll be sure to keep you all posted on my current favorite beauty subscription service Birchbox and as always any future beauty endeavors. Next up- debating between subscribing to either Allure and Beauty Bar's Sample Society or New Beauty's Test Tube. Leave me a comment if you have feedback on any of these services, I would love your input.

NYX Cosmetics Provocateur Boudoir Mascara Review

At only $6 per mascara, NYX Cosmetics Boudoir mascara collection is cheaper than your average drug store cosmetics purchase, but your lashes will swear you spent at least three times that amount. I sampled the Provocateur voluminizing mascara, one of seven mascaras in the NYX Boudoir Mascara collection.

Brush option 1- Full coverage
Provocateur mascara adds volume while it separates lashes to avoid the clumped together look no one should be sporting. What makes this mascara stand out is the option of two brush sizes in one tube- one brush is for full, voluminous coverage, and the other for a lighter finishing touch that is perfect for lower lashes and the hard to reach inner eye lashes.

Brush 2- Lighter coverage, perfect for lower lashes
I've pretty much fallen in love with NYX Provocateur Boudoir Mascara. Not only will I know never be able to forget how to properly spell 'boudoir' after typing it so many times, after months of using mascara in the $25 and up range, NYX has reminded me that there really are great mascara options for affordable prices. French lessons aside, in addition to the unique two brush feature and the smudge-free, clump-free results, Provocateur mascara also easily washes off with eye makeup remover, coming off in smaller pieces rather than becoming a black puddle underneath your eye.

skyn ICELAND Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels

When I ventured backstage to cover the glamorous messy 1920's inspired makeup at Imitation by Tara Subkoff, the last place I anticipated ending up was in a chair getting products applied to my own face. Not one to turn down a beauty treatment, skyn ICELAND founder Sarah Kugelman shared her secrets to relieving stressed skin while a mini facial was being conducted on me. Before I knew it I ended up with the winged strips of skyn ICELAND Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels applied underneath my eyes. Mid-fashion week, trust me I definitely needed the eye gels to decrease eye puffiness and firm the sensitive area underneath my eyes. While it is hard to interview someone while feeling mildly ridiculous, it was well worth the end result.

Trying the Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels in the safety of my home

Founder Sarah Kugelman started skyn ICELAND after becoming chronically ill due to stress in 2003. Realizing the connection between stress and our skin, Sarah drew from her knowledge of over twenty years in the beauty industry and a trip to Iceland that was part of her healing process to create skyn ICELAND. A popular product in the skincare line, the Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels ($30, 8 pairs) with Hexapeptide technology are easy to apply and provide fast and immediate results. The eye gel is applied for ten minutes via a gel infused patch that contains the replenishing peptides and botanicals that reduce puffiness in the under eye area. The sensitive under eye area feels cool and refreshed, but surprisingly not sticky when the patch is removed. My personal experience with the eye gel ended with a shock- I didn't even need to reapply concealer after the ten minutes were up, my under eyes were that refreshed. Imagine that- me feeling comfortable without concealer?! Sold.

Purchase skyn ICELAND products on skyniceland.com, or search for a store near you carrying the products.

Nail the Look: Betsey Johnson Fall 2012

Backstage at the Betsey Johnson show is exactly what you'd expect- filled with balloons, candy, and ... Sephora nail technicians working their magic on the model's nails. If you feel as inspired by the nail design used by Betsey Johnson in her Twiggy-inspired Fall 2012 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week show as I did, try it out yourself at home in four simple steps.

Special thanks to the model backstage at Betsey Johnson who 'nailed' (pun intended) this perfect hand pose for me!

How To Nail the Look:

1. Start with a clear base coat
2. Apply two coats of OPI 'Black Onyx'
3. Apply two off-centered stripes of Betsey Johnson for Sephora by OPI 'Sparkling Personality'
4. Apply top coat and dry

The Betsey Johnson for Sephora by OPI collection includes seven full size original shades (including Sparkling Personality as seen on the model), additional shades in the mini nail set, playful nail decals including cherries and bows, and easy to apply nail trend tips featuring skull, cheetah, and lip patterns. The collection will be released in March 2012 at a Sephora near you.

Whitney Eve Fall 2012

When I found out I would be covering Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and took a peek at the calendar line up, Whitney Eve by Whitney Port was one of the first shows I knew I wanted, no needed, to attend. I've always loved Whitney, from her Teen Vogue intern days to those last few episodes of The City that I half watched.

My admiration for Whitney continued even after running into her (literally) one night in the East Village and not receiving a Tweet back from her about the incident (sad, but true- sometimes I  Tweet at celebrities and become upset when there's no response back).

Being the nerd that I am, I was super thrilled to be in the front row seat at Whitney Eve's show this morning. The collection reflected Whitney's personal style with mixed prints, textured knits, fitted blazers, and some sparkles thrown in the mix with metallic details dressing up shirts, blazers, and shorts.

On the beauty front, Make Up For Ever used a gorgeous orange-red shade of lipstick that complimented the playful, feminine clothing. As for the hair... well, I guess every model can't have sleek, easy breezy waves like designer Whitney Port. But I think I may have preferred that. Nails were by Zoya, a layer of Zoya Maisie over the powder blue Zoya Kristen.

Exclusive from the Front Row: Whitney Eve Fall 2012 at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Video

Exclusive video from the front row by Beauty Unbiased of the Whitney Eve final walk through. Whitney Port's inspiration for the Whitney Eve Fall 2012 Collection was an antique kaleidoscope which translated into graphic shapes, jewel tones, shattered prints, and luxe fabrics in the eclectic and feminine collection. Keep your eye out in the middle for the Criss Cross leggings worn with a few different looks- one of my favorite items in the collection.

Gold Plated Arrow Necklace from Stella and Dot

I'm a little bit obsessed with delicate jewelry pieces. There is something to be said about a subtle piece that can still grab your attention.
This necklace was gifted by Stella and Dot at the Daily Front Row's New York Fashion Week Style Session lounge.

Backstage with NYX Cosmetics at Imitation by Tara Subkoff Fall 2012 Presentation

An old fashioned magic show filled with1920's glam made the Imitation by Tara Subkoff and Doyle and Mueser Fall 2012 presentation during New York Fashion Week a refreshing and welcome change of pace to other fashion week shows. I went backstage with celebrity makeup artist Tina Turnbow for NYX Cosmetics for Examiner to get the inside scoop on how the affordable luxury NYX cosmetics brand was used to create a look filled with bold, vintage drama. Details on how to get the look featured on the models can be found in this Examiner.com article.

Juicy Couture's DIY Charm Shop

Last night I ventured where my wallet fears to tread- aka the Upper East Side. I generally avoid stepping into stores that will create severe credit card debt over a single purchase and there are concentrated blocks for that echelon of stores on Madison Ave in the Upper East Side (tourists be warned!). I was however willing to take the risk for the Juicy Couture DIY Charm Shop Cocktails and Charm Event.

Juicy Couture has grown up a little over the years, and their new DIY Charm Shop  'Made By Us, Styled By You' gives the Juicy woman more autonomy when deciding how to incorporate Juicy's charms into her look. Juicy Couture employees shared the inspiration with me for the new DIY Charm Shop at the launch event: "A growing number of customers would come into the store and ask if we had any intial charms. The previous charm lines didn't include the popular trend of initials and tended to be larger and for a younger audience. We listened to our customers and developed the DIY Charm Shop."

The charms are about half the size and with a larger selection of charm options, including the popular initial trend, in pave rhinestones and silver or gold tones. Other charms included in the collection are a whimsical feather, blinged out lightening bolt, mini wishbone, and lucky elephant to name a few personal favorites. Should you be partial to Juicy Couture's larger charms, fear not. The option to rock a frappe charm complete with rhinestone studded whipped cream and straw is still available. Mixing and matching is encouraged. Prices range from $28-$38 per charm and can be purchased online through Juicy Couture or in stores.

An extended version of this article is also available on Examiner. Editor received a sample of the product for attending the event.

Results are in: Tria Blue Light

Two weeks ago I embarked on a ... well I started using the Tria Skin Perfecting Blue Light. Calling it a journey would be a bit dramatic as it actually was quite easy to incorporate into my daily routine. The blue light is applied directly to troubled areas of the skin for five minutes a day or twice a day for two minutes and thirty seconds.

Pros: I had a few blemishes to experiment on these two weeks and I did find immediate shrinking and decreased inflammation after using the Tria blue light. There was initial dryness but no noticeable negative changes in my skin during the past two weeks. The timer on the Tria made using it so simple.

Cons: While my blemishes did appear to shrink, the Tria did not get rid of them all together or in a rapid period of time. My biggest gripe has been with the short battery life and no warning before the batteries go completely dead. I'm not a fan of the Tria's need for cartridges and their limited number of uses. My cartridge came with 300 minutes and constantly counts down which gives me mild anxiety.

Results: I'm not giving up on my nightly Tria treatments and plan to continue them for the recommended six weeks for maximum results. In the fight against blemishes you can never have too many tools in your arsenal.
